We’re just about coming down off cloud 11 (that must be higher than Cloud 9 we’re sure). Why so we hear you ask?
Well, we toddled off to Leicester in late May 2012 to the VisitEngland National Excellence Awards. It was a rather grand affair (hosted by a Viscountess no less). The evening was to celebrate all that is good about tourism in our country. Why did we go there? Because we’d been nominated for two awards – Best B&B in the country and Best Self Catering Cottages in the country. So, even though it was a 600 mile round trip in 24 hours, you kind of couldn’t say “no, it’s a bit too far, we’re not going” could you?…
The Leicester shin-dig was a few nights before the Eurovision – and one of Leicester’s most famous former residents (Engleburt Humperdink) sent us all his best wishes via a text message to VisitEngland’s Chief Executive. How on earth did he find out that mobile phone number? Unfortunately, it appears none of us reciprocated with the necessary vim and vigour to The Hump’s “good luck and best wishes” text. We can only speculate about what would have happened if The Hump had received 400 texts of support from the assembled masses in Leicester. But it didn’t happen. The deed is done and we don’t have to host Eurovision for a while yet. Hey ho!
Anyway, back to the festivities. We met up with our friends (and adversaries) at Pentillie Castle overlooking the Tamar. They were also up for best B&B. Great to see them. We also hooked up with Alistair Handyside and the Premier Cottages crew who we were up against for best Self Catering cottage. T’was a fabulous evening with awards galore and much revelry. Perhaps the highlight was a very moving speech from the 11th Duke of Marlborough after he received a Lifetime Achievement Award for Service to Tourism.
We were delighted to bag a “Highly Commended” Award for our B&B. But to then receive a Silver Award for our Self Catering Cottages was awesome. It’s now official – we do provide some of the best self catering and B&B accommodation in the country.
Here is a photo of our proudest moment from the evening – us receiving our award from Viscountess Cobham.
We also had another photo with Viscountess Cobham for our B&B. She did a double take – “err haven’t I seen you before?”. “Yes” we said – proudly announcing that we were the only business in the country to have won 2 awards that evening!
