The idyllic old world fishing harbour of St Mawes with its mild climate, fascinating history and stunning location is one of Cornwall’s best kept secrets.
Sitting in the shelter of St Mawes Castle, the small harbour side village enjoys a wide selection of waterfront cafes, bars, restaurants, ice cream shops and galleries; it’s an absolute must for anyone staying at Roundhouse Barns.
There’s a big car park in the centre of the village which will give you easy access to the waterfront and from here it’s only a 15 minute walk up to St Mawes Castle – a 16th century castle built by Henry VIIth.
St Mawes is full of gems. There are great cafes, good pubs and some fantastic restaurants. It’s also a hub for the local ferry network. The St Mawes passenger ferry runs year round and is a 20 minute trip across the Carrick Roads to Falmouth where there’s an abundance of things to see and do.
Through April and October the Place Ferry also runs which will take you across St Mawes Harbour so you can explore the South West Coast Path on the opposite side.
If you’d rather not do anything at all, there are little beaches in St Mawes that through the summer can be Mediterranean-like sun traps. So sit back, relax and enjoy watching the world go by.
St Mawes Castle St Mawes Castle is among the best-preserved of Henry VIII's coastal artillery fortresses, and the most elaborately decorated of them all. There's great views from here across to it's sister castle, Pendennis, in Falmouth.
St Mawes Ferry Running 364 days a year and up to 3 times an hour during the summer months, this passenger ferry will take you on a lovely little journey across the harbour over to Falmouth. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins!
The Watch House Great little restaurant on the quayside that's open for lunch and dinner. Worth booking at busy periods. They also serve takeaway fish and chips...just make sure you keep them away from the seagulls.
The Driftwood A Michelin-starred restaurant but still a hidden gem. Run by Chris Eden and a real treat. Booking is essential.
St Mawes Hotel Perched right on the quay, this is a great place for sipping a drink and watching the world go buy. Reasonably priced food and open all year round.
Lamorran Gardens Delightful gardens that provide a beautiful window out to the sea. Very peaceful.
